STAFF PROFILE - Evelyn Lim Lay Lin

Academic Qualifications :
B.A. (Hons.) & M. A. (USM)

Institution of Higher Education :
Universiti Sains Malaysia

Extra Curricular Activities :
I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction books as a form of relaxation on weekdays. On weekends I go sport fishing. As an avid angler who is conscious of our environment, I practice catch and release. The community network where I enjoy participating in social events includes Penang Swimming Club (ordinary transferable member), Alliance Francaise (life member) and Life Saving Society of Malaysia (life member cum life saving instructor). I also enjoy traveling when I have the time.

How you intend to guide our students :
I have always subscribe to this, as quoted from Nathan M. Pusey, President of Harvard University in ‘This Week’ magazine, 9 June 1957, “I believe the teacher’s mission is to help every young person in his care to grow into the broadest, deepest, most vital person possible. And in fulfilling himself, the student will, I am convinced, arrive at moments of heightened insight when he sees more clearly than ever before what the world is about and how he can fit into it creatively and significantly.”

What is the value of a higher education :
We can’t place an exact value on higher education. For those who choose to embark on higher education, they would generally find it rewarding emotionally and mentally. In general, higher education enhances earning power according to a survey by a popular Kiplinger magazine ‘Changing Times’ 2008. It is evident from this study, people with higher education generally earn more over a lifetime. However, higher education usually adds assets and advantages that can’t be measured in dollars and cents. Through higher education, people will realize their full capabilities as human beings, find major pleasure in learning, live richly and do their part to create a better world. Education too does not have to end formally after a diploma or degree for an educated person will realize that lifelong and self education bring dividends of inestimable value.
