Learning English can be fun, particularly if it involves going
outdoors and being expressive, something that is not usually
practiced within the confines of a standard classroom. The Centre
for English Language (CEL) at KDU College Penang understands that
students nowadays need a different approach to learn the English
language.
Thus, CEL has put together a three-day English Language Programme
for students from one of the elite schools in Thailand, the Satree
Phuket School. A total of 50 students who were accompanied by six
teachers attended the programme that was held from 3 to 5 November
2008. Earlier this year, the students of Satree Phuket attended a
workshop organized by CEL and they liked it so much, they asked
CEL to organise this three-day workshop for them.
The activities that were planned throughout the three-day
programme were very much based on theatre or drama. Students were
exposed to basic drama necessities like props, expressions,
character building and pronunciation. They practiced their writing
skills through a basic script writing session and discovered how
music can be an equally important learning device, especially when
learning the core skills of the English language like listening
and speaking.
“This programme has helped open our eyes, as educators to new
ways and perspectives to teach the English language. We will
utilize to the fullest all the tips and techniques given during
the sessions. Thank you, KDU College Penang for organising this
programme for us,” quoted one of the teachers.
