FIELD
TRIPS - Peranakan Mansion Aug 09
‘At the Pinang Peranakan Mansion, the
legacies of the Peranakans are not only commemorated but the
restoration of this building complex also heralds the preservation
of Penang’s unique architectural history.’
On 9/9/09 Higher Intermediate (August 09 intake) went for their
first field trip to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion located at 29
Church Street. We were taken on a well informed tour by Mr Mady
that tells us about the features and functions of various parts of
the mansion. The 45-minute tour explains to us how the Chinese
Captian, Chung Keng Kwee successfully raise in social status from
a tin miner to the owner of tin mines. The admirable collection of
antiques tells us, the people of the present the life of those
long ago; from social past time, to wedding customs to servant
duties.
This house tells about the unique bland of the Malays and Chinese
(Peranakans) and how their lives were interwoven with the western
ways and yet still retaining the culture and traditions of their
forefathers.
The class is required to talk about Cultural Comparison, comparing
the life’s events of the Peranakans and that of their own. They
also need to write a journal entry about Identity. The Peranakan
Mansion serves as a physical representation of the golden era of
this race in Penang. History is preserved and passed on through
architecture, pictures, stories and etc. They are to share what
they would like to leave behind when they are gone and how they
want people to remember them.
