Elementary Field Trip to the Nursing

On the 19/06/09, the
elementary students were learning the topic entitled Health and
Technology. The Elementary students were taken on a field trip to
the nursing school to learn more about the basic tools used when
they go on a visit for a medical checkup. Ms Viviane Chin kindly
conducted a one and a half hour lecture showing them the common
medical tools used like the patella hammer, the various types of
thermometer, the sphygmomanometer, the weighing machine, the
stethoscope, the various types of syringes, plasters, tweezers and
other items in the ward. The students were given demonstrations on
the use of these machines and the normal readings. They were very
happy to be learning something useful because then they could
better understand the medical terms and procedures on their visits
to the doctor. Back in class they were given the vocabulary learnt
to make sentences with. They were also exposed to the terms of
various types of specialists that were normally encountered in a
hospital ie cardiologist, orthopedic, gynecologist, obstetrician,
pediatrician, geriatrician, ENT surgeon, radiologist, pharmacist,
oncologist, ophthalmologist etc. All in all the students felt that
this particular trip was interesting and useful.
