CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES - Stories Alive

On 22 June 2009,
Higher Intermediate students were again put through another round of
presentation, this time presenting a story assigned to them via the
Reading Programme 2009 conducted every semester. Students were
divided into groups of two or three and each group was allocated 15
minutes. During the 15 minutes, they were asked to speak about
several topics such as the summary of the story, setting, plot, major
and minor characters and moral values. They were also asked to give
their personal opinions and state reasons for recommending the book
to certain people or groups.
Students were taken to seven different periods of both the American
and English Literature. Many were enchanted by the way their
classmates presented the stories and asked many questions and this
was exactly what the Reading Programme hope to achieve; the
inculcation of the love of reading among college students and the use
of books as a source for vocabulary enrichment. Seven stories namely
Treasure Island (Robert Louise Stevenson), Romeo and Juliet
(Shakespeare), Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens), Robinson Crusoe
(Daniel Defoe), The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde), The Jungle
Book (Charles Dickens) & Tales of Two Cities (Charles Dickens) were
presented.
Higher Intermediate students infused technology into their
presentation. There were slide shows, movies from You Tube, songs and
even characters from The Simpsons which made the presentation both
informative & entertaining for all who were there!
