CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES - Historic Georgetown Trail
Higher Intermediate students from May intake 2009
presented about different historical places in Penang and favourite
dishes among Penangnites on 28 May 2009. Before their presentation,
they were taken on a field trip where they surveyed Georgetown on
foot. They started on a hot, sunny morning at Pinang Peranakan
Mansion, a fabulous Baba Mansion built by a Hakka tin miner, Kapitan
Chung Keng Kwee in the 19th century during the heyday of the Straits
Chinese. The Pinang Peranakan Mansion was a splendid sight and the
twenty one International students from different parts of the world
i.e. Korea, Thailand, Turkmenistan & China were in awe. From Pinang
Peranakan, they adjourned to ‘Streets of Harmony’ comprising
colourful Little India, busy Light Street and serene China Street.
During their walk around ‘Street of Harmony’, they caught sight of
the oldest Hindu temple in town, the Sri Mahamariamman temple, Khoo
Kongsi, a clan temple that displays fine architecture and
craftsmanship of Southeast Asia and bustling Market Street which is
affectionately known as ‘Little India’.
At the end of the walk, students were told to do some research to
assist them in their presentation the following week. They presented
on places like the historical Sri Mahamariamman temple, exotic Little
India, the eclectic architecture of Pinang Peranakan Mansion, famous
secret ‘society leader’, Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee and dishes enjoyed
by Penangnites.
It was indeed a great experience for the international students. One
Korean student in particular, Kim Jung Mi (Anna) stated that, ‘the
trail was both tiring and awesome as I not only get to see ancient
and great buildings but was also intoxicated by the sound and the
smell!’
It was indeed a walk to remember…
